Special Education
Mission Statement
The mission of EMUHSD and the Special Education department is to provide all students standard-based curriculum which will also support transition and life skills with access to core curriculum through a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
Our Special Education department offers a range of programs designed to meet diverse student needs:
RSP: Resource Specialist Program
Service for students with mild to moderate disabilities who spend most of their day in general education classrooms.
- Students may spend one or two periods in a special education classroom.
- The remainder of the day is spent in general education classes
SDC: Special Day Class
Self-contained classrooms where students with more significant learning needs receive specialized instruction for the majority of their school day.
- Students spend 50% or more of their school day in SDC classrooms
- Smaller class sizes with lower student-to-teacher ratios to provide intensive, individualized support"
- Students receive Additional scaffolding and specialized pacing while accessing grade level standards.

CBI: Community Based Instruction
A transition-focused educational approach that teaches students functional life skills through direct instruction and practice in real community settings.
- Students leave the school campus to learn and practice skills in actual community locations
- Instruction occurs in locations such as grocery stores, restaurants, banks, public transportation, work places and recreational facilities.
Program placement is determined by each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team based on individual needs and goals.
